History
A Glimpse into the History of the Mountain Rescue Service Building
The story of the Mountain Rescue Service House began in 1975, when members of the mountain rescue service started building it in their spare time. Construction took ten years, and for many years the building served as a meeting point during shifts, a venue for organizing courses, and a place to spend time together. Later, the lodge also operated as an accommodation facility. After 35 years, it was in need of a complete renovation; we undertook this project in April 2020 and opened the lodge to the public in August 2021. The lodge offers year-round accommodation, dining services, and a bar for all nature lovers. A campsite also operates next to the lodge during the summer season.
About the location
Tále is a major tourist and recreational resort situated on the southern slopes of the Low Tatras in the Bystrá Valley, through which the Bystrianka stream flows. Its location makes it a popular winter destination, primarily due to its proximity to several ski resorts. The closest is Ski Tále, followed by Mýto pod Ďumbierom (6 km) and the popular Jasná Chopok South (8 km); the latter is connected to the northern side of the mountain and offers over 50 km of slopes with varying levels of difficulty. In winter, Tále and the surrounding area also feature numerous groomed cross-country skiing trails. In summer, the most popular hiking destinations include Ďumbier (the highest peak in the Low Tatras), the Gen. M.R. Štefánik Mountain Chalet, and Chopok, which is also accessible by cable car. Cycling and golf enthusiasts will also find plenty to enjoy at Tále. Notable attractions include the Cave of Dead Bats and the more easily accessible Bystrianska Cave. You can relax and cool off at the natural outdoor swimming pool located right at Tále.
Winter activities
In winter, skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy, as there are three major ski resorts located near the chalet: Ski Tále – 1 km Mýto pod Ďumbierom – 6 km Jasná Chopok South – 8 km In addition, cross-country skiing trails are available at Tále and Pohanské. When conditions are favorable, visitors can go ski touring along the Low Tatras ridge or enjoy winter hiking to the Gen. M.R. Štefánik Chalet or up to Ďumbier, which is accessible year-round.
Summer activities
The Horehronie region offers a wealth of destinations—not only for avid hikers but also for families with children and those who prefer to explore the world from the saddle of a bicycle.
Ďumbier and the Gen. M.R. Štefánik Mountain Hut
The most popular year-round route to Ďumbier starts at the Trangoška Hut parking area; follow the green trail past the Cave of Dead Bats to the Gen. M. R. Štefánik Hut, where refreshments are available. From there, continue along the red trail to Krúpovo sedlo (Krúpovo Saddle) and up to Ďumbier, which offers magnificent views. The total hiking time in summer is around 5 hours and 30 minutes, making the route suitable even for less experienced hikers and older children. More fit hikers can continue on to Chopok and descend back to Trangoška.
Chopok
You can reach Chopok by following the yellow-marked trail from Trangoška via Srdiečko and Kosodrevina, or simply by taking the cable car. If you choose the first option, allow six hours for the entire loop. From Chopok, you can also continue along the ridge—westward towards Dereše or eastward towards Ďumbier.
Bystrianska Cave
You can admire the karst formations in Bystrianska Cave from June to October. The accessible, easy circuit is 580 meters long, and the tour takes 45 minutes. Access to the cave is from the parking lot in the village of Bystrá.
Cave of Dead Bats
You can enjoy a genuine experience with real cavers in this cave, located in the high-mountain karst area of the Ďumbier massif. The cave is accessible from the Trangoška mountain hut via the green-marked trail. It offers a route suitable for families with older children, as well as routes requiring experience in mountain terrain and climbing. Advance booking by phone is required for the tour.
Tále Educational Trail
Just a few meters from the cabin, there is an interactive educational trail suitable for families with children. It is approximately 1 km long and offers a playful way to learn about plants, animals, and forest features. Download the "Lesní svět" app from Google Play or the App Store to your phone and collect all the sounds of the forest. Head to the left of the cabin, and after about 200 meters, you will reach the first information board.
Horné Lazy Observation Tower
The Horné Lazy observation tower is the second-tallest observation tower in Slovakia. After climbing 192 steps to a height of 39.6 meters, you will be captivated by beautiful panoramic views of the entire Low Tatras—stretching from Kráľova hoľa to Banská Bystrica—as well as the royal town of Brezno, the Horehronie Valley, and the Vepor Mountains. Hikers can reach the tower from the Banisko area via a scenic 4-kilometer walk that takes about 60 minutes. An interactive educational trail leads to the tower, featuring not only interesting information about the local nature but also wooden sculptures of animals that inhabit the forests of Horné Lazy.
Gray Bear Golf
Within walking distance, you will also find the Gray Bear golf course, set amidst stunning natural scenery and covering an area of approximately 60 hectares.
Tarzánia Tále
Fun awaits both young and old in the treetops. The course features 23 obstacles situated 5 to 7 meters above the ground. Experienced instructors will provide training and equip you with the mandatory safety gear.
Tále Natural Swimming Area
If you are looking for a relaxing break, you will find the Tále natural swimming area just a few meters from the cottage. We recommend visiting this spot in the early evening to enjoy the sunset.
Cycle touring
Discover Horehronie from the saddle of a bike; a multitude of cycling routes of varying difficulty await you. We recommend the cycling trip from Tále to Vajskovský Waterfall.
Čierny Hron Railway and Vydrovo Forestry Open-Air Museum
The Čierny Hron Railway offers a unique experience of riding in historic carriages. We recommend combining the trip with a visit to the Vydrovo Forestry Museum, where the railway has two stops. Along the educational trails winding through the forest, you can learn about the history, conservation, and importance of the forest, as well as the work of foresters. The open-air museum features numerous exhibits of logging machinery, along with a forester's lodge, a chapel, and attractions for children.
Kráľova hoľa
Celebrated in legends and poems, it is one of the most visited peaks in the Low Tatras. The trail starts in the village of Šumiac (blue-marked) or in Telgárt (green-marked). If you set out from Telgárt, we recommend stopping at the famous Chmároš Viaduct railway bridge.
Zbojská Saddle
Located approximately 34 km from the cottage is the Zbojská Saddle, featuring an observation tower, a well-known traditional shepherd's hut, and the beautiful Jakub Surovec educational forest trail. The lesser-known Čertova Dolina (Devil's Valley) is also worth mentioning.
